My Evening Routine
As promised, here is a look at my evening routine. I believe that the evening routine is the biggest contributing factor to morning routine success.
Most of the evening is variable for me because I don't get home from work at a set time. What doesn't change, however, is the last 20-30 minutes before I go to sleep. Here are the four key things I do every night right before going to sleep.
- Foam roll - besides injury prevention and relief for sore muscles, a foam roller is great for de-stressing. I don't know about you, but I don't have the option to get a massage every night so this is the next best thing. It breaks up knots and tension that built up during the day and leaves me feeling relaxed and ready for bed. THIS is by absolute favorite roller.
- Phone away - I plug my phone in on the other side of the bed and set to Do Not Disturb. Why is the hardest thing?!?
- Gratitude/Reflection - similar to what I do in the morning, I kneel beside my bed to reflect on the day and give thanks for all that the day held for me - both good and bad. It's grounding for me to take a deep breath and pause. I tend to feel a bit frantic about finally getting into bed so I can get enough sleep so this final pause is super helpful.
- Read - It's no secret that I love to read and this is really my only window to do so during the work week. THIS is what I'm currently reading!
To me, an evening routine needs to be simple because at the end of the day, mustering the energy or motivation to anything special feels like just.too.much. My advice is to find a few things that help you wind down and end the day on a positive note. A bedtime routine also signals to your body that it's time to sleep!
I would love to hear what your evening routine is like! Leave a comment or send me a note.
